What we do

Gums that bleed when you brush, look swollen, or seem to be pulling back from your teeth are usually a sign of gum disease. It's common, it's treatable, and the main treatment is a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. It's for anyone whose gums need more than a regular cleaning can do.

How we know it's gum disease

At your exam we gently measure the small space between each tooth and the gum around it. Healthy gums fit snugly. When bacteria and hardened buildup (tartar) collect below the gumline, that space deepens and the gum gets inflamed. X-rays show whether the bone that holds your teeth has been affected. We'll show you the numbers and the images so the recommendation makes sense.

What a deep cleaning is

Scaling removes the tartar and bacteria from below the gumline, where a toothbrush and a regular cleaning can't reach. Root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gum can heal and reattach more closely. We numb each area first, and it's usually done in sections over one or two visits.

Afterward your gums may feel tender for a few days. Most people notice less bleeding quickly.

Why it's worth treating

Untreated gum disease is a leading cause of adult tooth loss. It doesn't usually hurt until it's advanced, which is why people put it off. Treating it early is simpler, cheaper, and keeps the teeth you have. We'll follow up with regular cleanings to keep it from coming back.

Questions

About gum disease treatment

Is a deep cleaning the same as a regular cleaning?
No. A regular cleaning is preventive and focuses above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning treats gum disease below the gumline and is done with numbing, usually in sections.
Does a deep cleaning hurt?
We numb each area before we start, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Gums can be tender for a few days afterward.
Does insurance cover deep cleanings?
Many plans cover scaling and root planing as basic care, often at a lower percentage than preventive cleanings and after the deductible. We check your plan and give you the numbers in writing first.
