What we do
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of your mouth, usually arriving in the late teens or twenties. Many mouths don't have room for them, so they come in crooked, get stuck under the gum, or trap food and bacteria. Removing them prevents pain, infection and crowding. It's for teens and adults, and it's never too late if they're causing trouble.
Why wisdom teeth cause problems
- Impaction: the tooth is stuck under the gum or bone and can't come in fully
- Crowding: pressure on the teeth in front of them
- Infection: a partly erupted tooth traps food and bacteria under a flap of gum
- Decay: they're hard to reach with a toothbrush
How we decide
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. We look at x-rays and your symptoms, and tell you which teeth are a problem now, which are likely to become one, and which can stay. If you're in pain, that's the priority.
The procedure and recovery
Teeth that have fully come in can often be removed like any other tooth. Impacted teeth need a surgical extraction, where the tooth may be removed in sections. Everything is done with the area numbed, and nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation can make it easier.
Most people are back to normal within a few days to a week or two. Plan on soft foods, rest, ice for swelling, and following the aftercare instructions to protect the healing sockets.
Cost
The cost depends on how many teeth, whether they're impacted, and whether you choose sedation. Many plans cover extractions, and we help adult Medicaid patients use their benefits. No insurance? The Sunshine Membership takes 30 to 40% off dental treatment for a $110 one-time fee, and Sunbit and Cherry offer monthly payments.
