What we do

TMJ is the joint where your jaw meets your skull, and TMJ problems show up as jaw pain, clicking, tired jaw muscles, headaches, or worn teeth from grinding. Treatment here starts with finding the cause, then usually a custom oral appliance (a splint or night guard) that takes the pressure off.

Signs it might be your jaw

You don't need all of these. Two or three together is worth a conversation:

  • Soreness in your jaw or face, especially in the morning
  • Clicking, popping or grating when you open or chew
  • Headaches around the temples
  • Teeth that look flat, chipped or worn
  • A partner who hears you grind at night

How we figure out what's going on

The dentist looks at your bite, the wear on your teeth, how your jaw opens and closes, and the muscles around it. Imaging helps us see the joint and rule out other causes. Many TMJ problems are tied to clenching or grinding, often during sleep, and that's something an appliance can help with directly.

What treatment looks like

An occlusal splint or night guard is a custom-fit appliance you wear, usually at night. It keeps your teeth from grinding against each other and lets the jaw muscles relax. Because it's made to your bite, it's more comfortable and more protective than a store-bought guard. We'll check the fit and adjust it as needed.

We'll also talk through everyday habits that make jaw pain worse. If what we find points to something outside what we treat, we'll tell you plainly and point you to the right kind of specialist.

Questions

About TMJ and night guards

Is a custom night guard better than a drugstore one?
A custom guard is made from your bite, so it fits closely, stays in place, and is less bulky. Drugstore guards can help in a pinch, but they don't fit as well and can wear through quickly.
Will a night guard fix my jaw pain?
For many people whose pain comes from clenching or grinding, a guard helps a lot. It isn't a guaranteed cure for every jaw problem, which is why we start with a proper diagnosis.
Does insurance cover night guards?
Some plans do and some don't. We'll check your plan and give you the cost in writing before we make one.
