What we do

If the dentist makes you anxious, you have options here. Some people just need us to go slowly and explain everything. Others do better with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral conscious sedation, a prescribed pill that leaves you relaxed and drowsy. Both are available at our Mesquite office for the patients they're right for.

Start with telling us

Say you're nervous when you book. We'll plan extra time, explain every step before it happens, numb thoroughly, and stop if you raise your hand. For a lot of people that's enough, and they never need sedation at all.

Nitrous oxide

You breathe it through a small mask over your nose. Within a few minutes you feel calm and a little light. You stay awake and can talk. When the procedure is done, you breathe plain oxygen for a few minutes and the effect wears off, so most people can drive themselves home.

Nitrous isn't right for everyone. Pregnancy and some health conditions, such as glaucoma or sleep apnea, can rule it out. We'll review your health history first.

Oral conscious sedation

This is a prescribed pill taken before your visit. You'll be deeply relaxed and drowsy, and many people remember little of the appointment afterward. We monitor your breathing and heart rate throughout. You will need someone to drive you there and home, and to stay with you for a while after.

It's often a good fit for longer procedures, like wisdom teeth or implant surgery, or for patients whose anxiety makes regular care feel impossible.

Questions

About sedation and anxiety-free care

Will I be asleep?
No. Neither option here puts you to sleep. With nitrous you're relaxed and awake. With oral conscious sedation you're very drowsy and may not remember much, but you can still respond.
Can I drive after sedation?
Usually yes after nitrous oxide, once it has worn off. Never after oral conscious sedation; you'll need a driver.
Does insurance cover sedation?
It depends on the plan and the procedure. Some plans cover it for certain treatments and many don't. We'll check and tell you the cost in writing before your visit.
